Donyale Luna

Donyale Luna, born Peggy Ann Freeman, was the first notable African American model.

A Detroit native, Donyale was discovered by photographer David McCabe, at the tender age of  18 and moved to New York City in the pursuit of a modeling career.

"Being what I am, I can get what I ask."

An Exotic Beauty to say the least, Donyale had mesmerizing features with her chestnut shaped eyes,and her endless limbs. She was known for wearing blonde wigs and cerulean contacts-Her Signature Statement of Style!

In January 1965 a sketch of Donyale appeared on the cover of Harper's Bazaar.


Donayle was the first African American to appear on the cover of British Vogue in 1966.

Donyale strut her stuff across the globe and paved the way for many others seeking a career on the runway. Outside of her modeling career, Donyale also had prominent film roles in the late 60's and 70's, several were produced by Andy Warhol.


Being a child of the sixties, Donayale Luna loved the nightlife and eventually her lifestyle caught up with her . On May 17, 1979 Donyale Luna passed away due to a drug overdose. Just goes to show you can never judge a book by it's cover, we all have a unique story, you have to look further than the exterior...Beauty is Skin Deep!
