Donyale Luna, born Peggy Ann Freeman, was the first notable African American model.

In January 1965 a sketch of Donyale appeared on the cover of Harper's Bazaar.
Donayle was the first African American to appear on the cover of British Vogue in 1966.
Donyale strut her stuff across the globe and paved the way for many others seeking a career on the runway. Outside of her modeling career, Donyale also had prominent film roles in the late 60's and 70's, several were produced by Andy Warhol.
Being a child of the sixties, Donayale Luna loved the nightlife and eventually her lifestyle caught up with her . On May 17, 1979 Donyale Luna passed away due to a drug overdose.
